• Who's the audience for your speeches on this trip? Is it members of the administration or Americans broadly? Who are you hoping to convey that message to?
    Speaker2
  • Pierre Poilievre
The latter. I believe in leverage. We're going into the renewal of the USMCA. One of our greatest leverage points is the goodwill of Americans. I wanted to bring vivid illustrations of how life could be more affordable for Americans if we had tariff-free trade.
  • Your audience is Americans generally. But I imagine you want to convey this to the President of the United States who's pushing for tariffs. Do you think that message can be resonant with him based on how he approaches trade?
    Speaker2
  • Pierre Poilievre
Yes, because what the President really wants is to repatriate production and jobs to America. I understand his argument about jobs outsourced to China. That doesn't happen with Canada. Our role is to supply goods for production. 70% of what we sell you goes into your production supply chain.
  • I want you to draw a contrast between your view of Canada in the world and the Prime Minister's vis-à-vis the United States. Prime Minister Carney went to Davos, talked about an irreparable rupture that Canada needs to move on from. Your outlook is markedly different.

  • Pierre Poilievre
My outlook is that the United States and American capitalism is the greatest economic force the world has ever seen. That's a mathematical fact. U.S. GDP far outstrips any competitor. We sell twice as much to America as to the rest of the world combined. We sell 20 times more to America than to China. Our interests are intertwined. We have to get this relationship back on track.
  • So much rhetoric from the Liberals was that Mark Carney can confidently negotiate with President Trump. There wasn't a lot of that from you. For those wondering, how would you approach trade negotiations differently? How would you broker a deal?
    Speaker2
  • Pierre Poilievre
Leverage. That's the key word. We have a lot of leverage we don't realize. We're America's second biggest customer. We are the number one destination for exports from about 30 different states.
